Blog Post #3

Hello friends! Today's topic is the new Tesla Roadster. Many years ago, society made bold and innovative predictions about what was to come of the future, one of those was flying cars. Although flying cars may not provide much benefit to society right now, Tesla still found a way to engineer a car capable of short bursts of flight, as seen in stunts. It caught the United States quickly by storm. People are quick online to talk about the stats this car fronts, comparing good and bad numbers to other similar super cars. This jumping, flying car with a 0-60mph time of 0.81 seconds quickly caught my attention as well, but along with some other things to discuss.

Well, it worked': Elon Musk unveils new Tesla Roadster that can fly | Euronews

Tesla is an electric car company, that aims to provide comfort, luxury, within its environmentally sustainable cars with autonomous driving and high performance capabilities. It offers only a short deal of models that are revamped yearly, being the 3, S, X, Cybertruck, Y, Semi-truck, and most recently, the Roadster.

After digging around content related to the new showing of the Roadster, the public eye holds both negative and positive viewings of the flying car. One popular thing to mention is how the car has been in development stages since its original concept prototype unveiled in November 2017. With the original batch set to hit production in 2020 (which did not happen) the new and current target is 2028. Obviously, customers who sent in money to reserve a spot are growing tired. People also can't stop talking about the main innovation of this car, being the cold gas thrusters. This is fueled by a 10,000psi 200L tank in the rear of the car and allows for the crazy flips and jumps above. The stunts pulled off with this brought tremendous amounts of deserved, earned media. Lastly, consumers are questioning the price, as no official price for the models listed are given. Customers only options today are to fork over $50,000 or even up to $250,000 just to reserve a spot in line to later finish the purchase of the car.

On Tesla's own social media account, they mainly showcase their products in action, which is good. For a company as large as Tesla is and how well known their products are, using their large instagram following for brain-dead promotions and advertising could end up hurting business more than helping. @teslamotors showcases all their types of cars and in all types of situations. There is slight promotional content for their premium "Full Self Drive (Supervised)" software that is available with a monthly subscription. @teslamotors actually has one of the best instagram content pages I've seen in a while. One post is about their record breaking manufacturing plant, another is about some of the extremely useful features of the cars, and another is a relatable, funny joke post about the upcoming long weekend. It's less of a Tesla advertisement and more of a collection of Tesla related videos.

Tesla is always trying to do something remarkable, and each car has specific, remarkable moments that they debut with, whether it's today's flying car, or the cyber truck and its bulletproof glass. The main focus of their social media page though is to create brand recognition. Throughout the mass videos and photos posted on social media, they always include top-notch photography of the cars and highlight useful and separating features that Tesla's have. Marketing wise, electric cars are an alternative to gas powered cars that not everybody is capable of making the switch too. Tesla runs on its own type of charger that isn't present everywhere. Tesla cars also have moderate battery capacity and need charging regularly. There is a Tesla backed blog called Tesla Motors Club where content is filled from head to toe, but lacks any answering/action from the brand themself.

If I were the brand manager of Tesla, I would try to have a small team that's active on the blog. That creates a relationship with the customer. I could also reorganize the story highlight features on their instagram pages to be an information center, and keep a couple informative posts off the main content of the page.

I learned what a well rounded instagram page looks like. Not too promotional but also always pro-Tesla content. I learned that large companies still receive normal backlash and criticism, even after large showcases like the Roadster revealing.
